Protect Your Mouth
Fluoride treatments can help restore your smile and reverse minor cavities. In turn, this helps keep your mouth healthy. Fluoride treatments are typically recommended for younger children who are more prone to cavities, but may also be recommended in some adults.
At Myrtle Grove Dentistry, Dr. Nathan Graves specializes in preventative dentistry in Myrtle Grove, South Wilmington, and Monkey Junction. Learn more about fluoride treatments below.
Keeping Your Teeth Strong And Healthy
With Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride treatment is usually recommended if signs of tooth decay are present in the mouth, but a large cavity has not yet developed. This is because fluoride has the unique ability to help “remineralize” tooth enamel. High concentrations of fluoride help the enamel “rebuild” itself, which can prevent a cavity from forming altogether.
The process of having a fluoride treatment applied typically takes just a few minutes at our office. Typically, it’s done during a standard six-month oral exam, if one or more of your teeth show signs of tooth decay.
Dr. Nathan Graves or one of our dental hygienists will apply a fluoride gel or “varnish” to your teeth directly, using a cotton swab or a brush. Then, this gel is left in place for several minutes to allow the fluoride to bond with the teeth.
After this, the fluoride is cleaned off, and you’ll be asked not to eat, drink, or rinse your mouth for at least 30 minutes, to allow optimal fluoride absorption. Further fluoride treatments may be recommended every 3, 6, or 12 months, based on your risk of tooth decay.
Dr. Graves will likely also recommend improving your personal oral hygiene habits, as fluoride treatment is not typically required for adults if you are brushing and flossing correctly.
Understanding Fluoride SafetY
What You Need to Know
Fluoride is completely safe, and highly-recommended by dentists. Fluoride is a naturally occurring, inorganic substance that is found just about everywhere. It’s estimated that fluoride is the 13th most abundant element in the earth’s crust.
Though some folks claim that fluoride is bad for your health, their claims are completely unfounded. Hundreds of tests by the ADA (American Dental Association) have found that, when used properly, fluoride is completely safe, and one of the best ways to protect your dental health and prevent tooth decay.
So don’t worry. Fluoride treatments from Dr. Nathan Graves of Myrtle Grove Dentistry are completely safe for both you and your children. Anyone who says otherwise is misinformed.
